Greetings from California! My name is Jonathan, and I’m one of the two Diceroys (along with Richie) running Ranked Play events at Gamescape in San Francisco! We were fortunate to meet and team up for the “Age of Destruction” Ranked Play soft launch last year, and have been steadily growing the local community ever since.
During the “off-season” we host a variety of Learn to Play events to keep the community engaged, and are always looking for ways to connect with local players - on social media, at games nights, or anywhere the moment strikes! We have also greatly appreciated joining forces with fans from nearby Mountain View, where Lawrence-Michael has been building a scene as the Diceroy for Next Level Board Game Cafe!
I’m proud to say that everyone’s efforts resulted in our first sold out event last month at Gamescape, filling all 24 available spots! This would not have been possible without the amazing and dedicated group of individuals that show up month after month to share their love of Dice Throne and support Ranked Play.
Through email and Discord, many of our players have also been able to connect for casual and co-op games and just to chat about strategies, favorite heroes, or even the best places to eat after the next tournament! These connections have been key to building a sense of community and friendship among players from all around the Bay Area. For me, each event is like a mini “Dice Throne Con”; a mix of fans new and old, sharing their passion for our favorite game.
To anyone who wishes to build this kind of scene where you live, I encourage you to just get out there and share the game with people. Show them what you love about it, and build your local community one fan at a time. And if you’re ever in the area, let us know! The scene continues to grow here, with Ranked Play locations in San Francisco, Mountain View, Davis, and soon to be more! We’d love to throw dice with you when you’re in town!
Participating as a Diceroy is the perfect fit for me at these events, because I get to interact with other fans as a host, resource, and tournament judge. But also – to any players who might consider shying away from competitive play – let me reassure you that these events are quite friendly and welcoming to players of all types!
